Dire Straits

Nastali krajem 70-tih godina pod uticajem britanske rok scene, Dire Straits su status zvezda stekli 80-tih. Bend su u početku činili gitarista i autor pesama Mark Knopfler, njegov brat David, John Illsley (bas gitara) i Pick Withers (bubnjevi). Svoj prvi album jednostavno nazvan Dire Straits izdali su 1978, a singlom Sultans Of Swing uprkos tadašnjim prevladavajućim pank i disko trendovima, dospeli su u Top 10 s obe strane Atlantika. Mark Knopfler je preko noći proglašen najboljim britanskim gitaristom nakon Claptona.

Mark Knopfler (Mark Knopfler rođen 12. avgusta 1949. godine u Glazgovu, Škotska) i njegov brat Dejvid Knopfler (David Knopfler rođen 1951. u Glazgovu, Škotska) preselili su se još kao mladi u Njukastl. Mark je studirao Englesku literaturu na univerzitetu u Lidsu i kratko vreme radio kao mladi reporter u Yorkshire Evening Post-u. Posle studija osnovao je bend koji je uglavnom svirao po pabovima, ali njegov glavni prihod bio je držanje privatnih časova. Knopflerovi su se preselili u London početkom sedamdesetih i Mark upoznaje basistu Jona Ilslija (John Illsley rođen 24. juna 1949 u Lesteru, Engleska) diplomiranog sociologa koji je radio u prodavnici ploča, i bubnjara Pika Vitersa (Pick Withers) koji je svirao godinama. Kako "klima" nije bila odgovarajuća za bend koji se bavio bluzom mnoge izdavačke kuće propuštaju šansu da izdaju album ove grupe.

Jedna od njihovih tadašnjih pesama se izdvojila, to je pesma "Sultans Of Swing". Ovu pesmu "zapazio" je i Čarli Džilet (Charlie Gillet) DJ radio Londona i rok istoričar, počeo je da je "pušta" svakog dana u etar i do kraja godine Dire Straits snima debi album za Vertigo records, pesma postaje prvo hit u Holandiji i kasnije dolazi među prvih deset na top 10 listi u Velikoj Britaniji. Veliki Warner Bros izdaje ovaj singl u SAD-u i pesma dolazi do drugog mesta na Bilbord listi. Njihov drugi singl "Lady Writer" bio je relativno neuspešan, ali nije imao mnogo uticaja na dalji uspeh ovog benda. Dejvid Knopfler počinje solo karijeru i izdaje par albuma za neke nezavisne produkcijske kuće, u bendu ga menja Hal Lindes (Hal Lindes) koji je svirao u Darling-u, bendu se pridružuje i Alan Klark (Alan Clark) na klavijaturama. Treći album "Making movies" doneo je niz kritika na Knopflerov račun ali balada "Romeo and Juliet" došla je na 10 mesto UK top 10 liste. Sledeći album "Love Over Gold" prošao je mnogo bolje nego predhodni i singl sa tog albuma "Private investigations" postaje njihov najveći hit i dolazi na 2 mesto UK to 10 liste u septembru 1982. Knopfler neko vreme provodi bez benda i radi kao producent na albumu Bob Dylan-a (album Infields 1983.) tada je napisao i "Private dancer" pesmu koja postaje hit 1984. godine, a peva je Tina Turner. Jedno vreme izgledalo je da se Dire Straits neće više nikad okupiti, jer je Mark Knopfler bio zauzet producentskim radom na tuđim albumima. Međutim ponovu su se okupili 1983. godine ali su zamenili bubnjara Vitersa, Terijem Vilijamsom (Terry Williams) bišim bubnjarom grupe Man i započeli su turneju po svetu. "Živi" album "Alchemy" popunio je prazninu između dva albuma, posle tog izlazi album "Brothers in arms" 1985. godine. Kao i što se desilo i mnogim bendovima posle pojavljivanja na Live Aid koncertu prodaja njihovog albuma se naglo povećava... Posle toga izdaju album "Money for nothing" i Knopfler tada ismejava spotove na MTV-u, među tim spotovima našao se i njegov za pesmu "Money for nothing" koja dolazi do mesta broj 1 na US listama. Sa tog albuma izdvojile su se još dve pesme i to "Walk Of Life" i "So Far Away". Davne 1985-te oni su se sa pesmom "Money for nothing" nalazili na prvom mestu Američke top liste singlova. Uz ovu pesmu je urađen i fenomenalan spot koji je na prečac postao jedan od zaštitnih znakova muzičke televizije MTV, a zanimljivost vezana za ovaj album je da je on uneo prekretnicu u korišćenje novog medija za prenos muzike, polularnog CD-a. Ovo je bilo prvo CD izdanje koje prodato u tiražu od preko milion primeraka. Još jedna zanimljivost vezana za grupu Dire Straits: leta 1985. godine na Gripama u Splitu grupa je uvezbavala materijal sa novog albuma "Brothers in Arms". Prvi probni koncert su svirali u Izraelu, a odmah zatim je na red dosao i Beograd odakle su poceli svetsku turneju. Tada je i izdat pomenuti album koji je svoju svetsku promociju imao u Beogradu, i za koji je PGP imao licencu.

Omiljena?
Od laganica: You and Your Friend (ali, pocinjem da se topim kad ovo cujem ) i Your Latest Trick.
Od malo brzih: definitivno Sultans of Swing... dakle, to je tesko i otpevati, a kamoli odsvirati

Zekane, deder pribeleži još jedno pozitivno brojanje za Dire Straits od mene. Njihovu muziku pratim još od samog početka i kao srednjoškolac sam se drogirao Sultanima Swinga

Sa tog, prvog albuma, pored Sultana omiljena mi je stvar Wild West End!
Zatim je usledio nešto malo slabiji album Communique, sa kojeg bih izdvojio Single Handed Sailor i, naravno, Once Upon a Time in the West.
1980. godine izašao je predivan album Making Movies, na kome praktično nema loše stvari, ali ako već treba da izdvojim favorite, onda su to svakako Expresso Love, Solid Rock i prekrasna Romeo & Juliet.
Nakon toga, 1982. godine izdaju album Love Over Gold, sa fantastičnim Telegraph Road i Private Investigations.
I onda sledi njihov vrhunac IMHO, na albumu Brothers in Arms, izdatom 1985. godine, sa već pomenutom Your Latest Trick (Hail, Meggy ), umilnom uspavankom Why Worry, vrhunskim Ride Across the River i The Man's Too Strong, supermegahitom Money for Nothing i pesmom koja je na mene ostavila najjači utisak - Brothers in Arms. Ova poslednja je, po meni, ujedno i njihova tekstualno najjača pesma, te stoga ne mogu da odolim da je ovde u potpunosti ne ispišem. Sećam se da sam je maksimalno slušao negde u zimu 1986. godine, na nekom razdrndanom walkman-u, dok sam se žičarom peo na sunčani vrh maglom obavijene Jahorine. Zamislite, izlazite iz magle i sarajevskog smoga, a na vrhu ugledate okean od oblaka, dok vam u ušima odzvanja...these mist covered mountains...čoveče...od toga lako može da se rikne

DakleM, šta drugo reći do - Mark Knopfler je živa legenda!

P.S. Priznajem, doduše, da sam nakon toga prestao da pratim njihov rad, ali sam pre nekih par meseci došao u posed kompletne njihove diskografije, tako da je sad s vremena na vreme preslušavam. Baš sam maločas, potaknut postom moje friendice Meggz (Cruella rules ) poslušao pesmicu You and Your Friends i normalno - oduševio se!

Ja najviše volim Romea i Juliju paaaaa Sultans of Swing, Brothers in arms, Money for nothing, Tunnel of love, I think I love you too much, If I had you,Your latest trick... su deo mog odrastanja, samim tim što mi je ćale veliki zaljubljenik u njihovu muziku, pa onda sve ono ostalo zbog čega ih ja volim... Dakle, Romea i Juliju sam slušala pred spavanje, tad je ćale pržio gramofon... možda mi je zato i najdraža... prijatan vokal, gitarica... uvek se setim kako je namigivao kevi na onaj stih "... says something like you and me babe how about it?..." Ma, jednostavno bend koji je lako slušati i teško ne voleti.
