(1945-1981)

Jamajka je zemlja manja čak i od Srbije, ali na muzičkoj karti svijeta zauzima mnogo važnije mjesto. Afričko naslijeđe i britanski kolonijalni uticaji doveli su do stvaranja hibridne kulture, koja će usloviti formiranje osobene muzičke vrste, jedne od najznačajnijih u savremenoj muzici.
Sigurno najveća od svih reggae zvijezda, Bob Marley je utabao stazu kojom su kasnije drugi koračali bez problema. Vješto balansirajući izmedju svojih korijena i zapadne pop kulture, Marley je uspio da naizgled ne eksperimentišući mnogo postane inovator i predvodnik. On je zaslužan što danas svatko zna gdje se nalazi Jamajka. Jedanaest Marley-evih legalnih albuma i brojni piratski i polulegalni bili su i ostali neka vrsta Biblije za svakog tko želi nešto da sazna o reggae muzici. Najveća muzička zvijezda Trećega svijeta i dalje sija punim sjajem.

Robert Nesta Marley rođen je 6. februara 1945. kao sin kapetana Norvala Marley-a i mlade jamajčanske djevojke Cedall Booker. Već 1962. Bob snima prvu singl ploču “Judge Not” koja prolazi nezapaženo. Uskoro Bob sreće Petera McIntosha (a.k.a Peter Tosh) i sa njim i Bunny-em formiraju bend The Wailing Wailers. Već početkom 1963. izlazi njihov prvi single “Simmer Down” i odmah dolazi na vrh jamajčanskih top lista. Narednih nekoliko godina Wailing Wailers (kasnije samo Wailers) ređaju hit za hitom, ali finansijske satisfakcije nema. Zbog toga se grupa raspada, a Marley odlazi u Ameriku, odakle se vraća nakon samo osam mjeseci. U to vrijeme, Bob postaje rastafarijanac. Opsjednut rasta idejama, ponovo osniva grupu Wailers sa Peterom Tosh-om i Bunny Wailer-om. Krajem šezdesetih, bend u saradnji sa Lee Scratch Perry-em, objavljuje hitove kao što su “Soul Rebel”, “400 Years” i “Small Axe”.

Wailers su već bili velike zvijezde na Jamajci, ali ipak van Jamajke nitko nije slušao reggae sve dok Wailers-i nisu objavili prvu ploču “Catch A Fire” za kompaniju “Island”. Island iste godine (1973) objavljuje “Burning” koji donosi dva mega hita (“Get Up Stand Up” i “I Shot The Sheriff”) i Wailersi postaju popularni širom svijeta. Dolazi do novih promjena: Bunny i Tosh počinju solo karijere i napuštaju bend. 1975. objavljuje album “Natty Dread” i predstavlja remek-djelo, a album “Rastaman Vibration” samo učvršćuje njegovu svjetsku slavu. Ipak, nije sve tako idilično: 5. decembra 1976, Marley je zakazao veliki besplatan koncert u Kingstonu; samo dva dana prije koncerta, na Marleya je pokušan atentat gdje su on i njegova žena Rita lakše ranjeni. Koncert je ipak održan, a Wailersi odlaze u Englesku gdje snimaju “Exodus”. Iako je album iz 1978 “Kaya” izvanredan, izdavajaju se pjesme “Runing Away”, “Is This Love” i “Easy Skanking”. “Survival” (1979) donosi drugaciji zvuk i drugačije tekstove - koji je fokusiran na emancipaciju crnaca. Godine 1980, Marley and the Wailers su tokom svečanosti proglašenja nezavisnosti Zimbabvea, nastupili na granioznom koncertu pred 200.000 ljudi na stadionu Rufaro u Harareu. Tada je Marli otkrio da više Zimbabveanaca zna tekstove njegovih pesama nego što znaju riječi njihove nacionalne himne. Lamentarni album “Uprising” (1980) donosi svjetski hit “Could You Be Loved” i oproštajnu “Redemption Song”.

U julu 1977, posle bezazlenog incidenta, kada je povredio nogu igrajući fubal, Marley-u su u Majamiju uklonjene kancerozne ćelije iz desnog palca. Nedugo zatim, krstio se u Etiopskoj Pravoslavnoj Crkvi, kao Berhane Selassie. U ljeto 1980, rak je počeo da se širi. Kasne 1980. počeo je liječenje kod kontrovrznog kancerologa, dr. Džozefa Islsa. Doktor je digao ruke 3. maja i Marley je odletio u Majami. Tu je i umro 11. maja. U 36 godini sahranjen je na Jamajci sa svojom Gibson gitarom i Biblijom i ostao jedini muzičar koji je sahranjen uz sve državne počasti.

Neverovatno, ali, otprilike, svi ljudi kojima se divim su završili na isti način i od iste boljke... No, legenda živi večno jedan respect od SQUAW za borca za crnački identitet, i muzičara sa fantastičnim tripom i fenomenalnim pesmama

Ne mogu da izdvojim jednu... opet će to biti nekoliko al' aj' za ovo javljanje neka to bude "Three little birds" koja upravo ide u mom plejeru

p.s. E, da sećam se... kao mala, kada sam gledala po novinama kada su rođeni poznati... uvek mi je bilo drago da znam da je Marley Vodolija... ne znam zašto...

U čast svog najpoznatijeg sunarodnika, Nacionalna banka Jamajke izdala je seriju kovanog novca s likom muzičara Boba Marlija. Kompanija „Britiš rojal mint” iskovala je 1.000 zlatnih i srebrnih novčića s profilom muzičara koji je proslavio frizuru sa dredovima. Novčići, koji se prodaju po ceni od 100 američkih dolara, trebalo je da budu izbačeni na tržište prošle godine, kada je proslavljena 60. godišnjica Marlijevog rođenja. Nacionalna banka nije objasnila zbog čega je došlo do kašnjenja. Marli, koji je umro 1981. kada je imao 36 godina, u svim anketama je najpopularniji Jamajčanin u istoriji te države. (FoNet)
